Första AP-fonden's participation in General Meetings

Första AP-fonden’s commitment to corporate governance is based on a conviction that investments in well managed companies will provide higher returns and lower risks in the long term.

Första AP-fonden therefore chooses to be a dedicated owner through shareholder activism – which includes corporate governance, social and environmental issues – in order to contribute to long-term value creation in the pension system. Första AP-fondens’s commitment to corporate governance is always motivated by what is best for the companies and their shareholders, and therefore also for current and future pensioners over time. In cooperation with other shareholders and stakeholders, the Fund promotes the best interests of the companies so that the Fund acts as – and is perceived as – a dedicated, responsible and long-term owner.

In 2011 Första AP-fonden participated in 30 Swedish general meetings, of which one was an EGM. Since the conditions for each company are unique, the Fund devotes considerable effort to understanding their various needs.

Första AP-fonden’s holdings in foreign companies are typically lower, which gives the Fund less direct influence in these companies. The Fund nonetheless votes at several foreign general meetings in accordance with the ownership policy. In the first six months of 2011 the Fund voted at 295 general meetings in foreign companies, of which 289 were AGMs and 6 were EGMs.
